2 DSWD centers receive Red Orchid Award

The plaques of recognition awarded by the Department of Health to the NTSB and the HE for their tobacco-free environment.

The National Training School for Boys (NTSB) and the Haven for the Elderly (HE), two centers managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV-A, received the Department of Health’s Red Orchid Award for implementing a 100 percent tobacco-free environment and following the World Health Organization’s MPOWER Network.

The said recognition was awarded to the centers last March 31 in Tagaytay City.

The NTSB is a residential care facility that provides protection and parental care to CICLs. The center provides rehabilitative services to the clients in a residential setting to prepare them for adjustment with their family and community after discharge. Meanwhile, the HE caters to senior citizens who are abandoned, neglected and needy.

Both centers are located in Brgy. Sampaloc in Tanay, Rizal Province.#

Partners, staff of Haven for the Elderly celebrate Family Day with the older persons

Members of the AFP 59th Infantry Battalion serve the residents of the Haven for the Elderly during their Family Day celebration.

The residents of the Haven for the Elderly joined in the celebration of the National Family Week last September 26, 2015 together with various partners and staff of the center.

With the theme “Pamilyang Pilipino, matibay na kaagapay para sa kaunlaran,” the celebration highlighted the importance of the family to individuals, particularly to the residents who are longing to be together with their respective families.

Mr. Ricky Bunao, the center manager of the Haven for the Elderly, emphasized to the elderly that their families now are their fellow older persons, the center staff and the donors and sponsors of the center.

Considering the elderly residents as families, various partners joined the celebration to serve and entertain the residents.

Bunao thanked the partners for their continuous support to the center, particularly the clients being cared for in the institution.

Among the partners during the activity are the Armed Forces of the Philippines 59th Infantry Battalion, the Rotary Club of Manila South, the Rotary Club of Eastwood, field instruction students from Bicol University, students from the University of the Philippines and the Franciscan Sisters Hospitaller.

The partners entertained the elderly residents through music, dance and inspirational talks.

The Haven for the Elderly is an institution managed by the DSWD Field Office IV-A that caters to senior citizens who are abandoned, neglected and needy.

To date, there are more than 200 elderly residents being cared for in the center.#

Residents in Haven for the Elderly enjoy therapy through humor, music

LEADING TO A HAPPY LIFE. As part of the therapeutic sessions for the older persons in the Haven for the Elderly, regular elderly clown programs are conducted to help improve the psychosocial wellbeing of residents through humor and music.

The residents of the Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal Province enjoy therapy sessions through regular elderly clown programs conducted by the Center as part of helping the older persons, especially those who are bed-ridden and who have dementia.

According to Ricardo Pening, the center’s resident psychologist, this activity is a therapeutic session that helps improve the psychosocial skills of the residents.

The elderly clown program employs the use of clowns who are usually center staff, student-interns, volunteers or residents themselves. The program includes singing, story-telling and dancing among others that allow the older persons to participate freely.

The program also reminds the residents of novelty songs from when they were younger.

“Through the use of humor and music, we are helping the older persons improve their wellbeing, which is beneficial for their health and everyday life during their twilight years,” said Pening.

He added that the laughter and participation from the residents during the elderly clown program sessions are enough proof of the effects of this therapy for the older persons.

The Haven for the Elderly is a residential facility managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office IV-A. The facility provides care to senior citizens, age 60 years old and above, who are abandoned, neglected and needy.

The elderly clown program is one of the services provided to the older persons among a range of other services such as home-life, health, livelihood, spiritual and recreational services.

To date, there are 237 senior citizens being cared for in the said center.#

Senior citizens in Haven for the Elderly celebrate Nutrition Month

Senior citizens who are residents of the Haven for the Elderly joined in the celebration of the Nutrition Month this July 2015. With the theme “Timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo,” the activity promoted good health and active lifestyle to the senior citizens for a longer life.

The Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal is managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office IV-A that provides residential care to senior citizens who are abandoned, neglected and needy.

To date, there are 237 senior citizens being cared for in the said center.

During the month-long celebration, various activities have been conducted and one of the highlights is the Nutri-Pageant, a search for NutriLolo and NutriLola. The said pageant not only dressed up the senior citizens with costumes incorporating local nutritious food but also gauged their awareness on good health and active lifestyle through the question and answer portion.

Center Head Ricky Bunao, in his message to the residents, shared that the older persons must maintain an active lifestyle and proper health and nutrition. Together with other staff in the center, Bunao enjoined the residents to apply what they learn from the celebration for a happier and longer life.

Haven for the Elderly 5th Anniversary Celebration

In celebration of the Haven for the Elderly’s 5th Year Anniversary, the Department of Social Welfare and Development will hold a series of activities on April 20 to 28, 2015 at the center’s compound in Barangay Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal under the theme ‘Haven for the Elderly, Patuloy ang Pagbangon at Pagunlad.’

The activities for the weeklong celebration will include sport fest among staff, exhibits of the livelihood products of the resident older persons, wellness exercises for residents and staff, and a celebration of a thanksgiving mass.  A recognition and acknowledgement of donors and benefactors of the center, and recognition of outstanding center staff will be conducted on the morning of April 28, 2015 to be followed by fellowship program in the afternoon.

According to Ricky Bunao, center head of Haven for the Elderly (HE), the celebration is expected to be headed by DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman with guests that includes Sen. Pia Cayetano, former Sen. Aquilino ‘Nene’ Pimentel, former Sec Esperanza I. Cabral, and former U/Sec Celia C. Yangco.  Local government officials led by Rizal Gov Rebecca Ynares, and Tanay Mayor Rafael Tanjuatco are also expected to graced the celebration.

“In as much as our we are recognizing  our partners, donors and staff during our anniversary celebration, we would also like to highlight the gains and successes of the center not only in providing services to the abandoned and neglected older persons but also in the promotion the rights and welfare of the older sector as a whole.  These accomplishments, we believe set the tone for an improved services for the Haven for the Elderly in the years to come,” Bunao said.

Haven for the Elderly is a residential facility that provides care to abandoned, neglected and unattached older persons ages 60 years old and above.  It began its operation in April 28, 2010 with the transfer of 60 older person-residents from the former Golden Acres in Quezon City.

As of March 31, 2015, the center is providing residential care to  259 older person residents.***

The Department of Social Welfare and Development recently inaugurated the Greenhouse project constructed, in partnership with Cherry Mobile Foundation, at the Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal.

The said project, which is part of the institution’s organic farming program, will serve as the seed bank for organic vegetables and would make the center become self sustaining in terms of vegetable supplies.***

The said project, which is part of the institution’s organic farming program, will serve as the seed bank for organic vegetables and would make the center become self sustaining in terms of vegetable supplies.

Ricky Bunao, the center manager of Haven for the Elderly, thanked the Cherry Mobile Foundation, the I Care for my City Foundation and the Barangay Council of Sampaloc, Tanay for their support to the project.

“Napaka-halaga po ng inyong supporta dito sa Greenhouse project ng aming center dahil maliban po sa makakatulong po itong project na ito sa pag-supply ng mga gulay dito sa center, ito po ay magsisilbi din paraan kung saan makapagbibigay kami ng  therapeutic activities sa mga matatandang residente dito,” Bunao said during the simple inauguration ceremony.

For their part, the partners committed to continuously support projects of the center, especially the Greenhouse project.

Haven for the Elderly is a DSWD-managed facility which provides residential care to abandoned and neglected older persons.  Currently, the center has more than 250 older person residents.

One of the residents, Lolo Abel Fuentes acknowledged the importance and benefits  of the project to them.

Haven for the Elderly is a residential facility that provides temporary care to abandoned, neglected and unattached older persons ages 60 years old and above.

The Center is composed of nineteen (19) cottages that includes a central kitchen, an infirmary/clinic, multi-purpose, laundry area, productivity, library, motor/generator, staff house and administration office. The Center can accommodate 270 residents.

As of October 31, 2014, the Haven for the Elderly has a total of 250 residents.
